Tomato Mortgage Lifter are large, very meaty flavoursome fruit (up to 400g each). The Tomato (Beefsteak) Mortgage Lifter Heirloom variety was named by a 1930's farmer whose bumper crop of this variety enabled him to save his farm from repossession. Who would have thought tomato seeds or any vegetable seeds could bring about such a great outcome. Fabulous all-round tomato, developed from Italian, German and English 'beefsteak' varieties. Staking is required for this variety. High yields of up to 16kg per plant.
Heirloom Garden: From the golden days of gardening, heirloom seeds have been saved and treasured through the generations.
Sow seeds 5mm deep in pots or trays of seed raising mix. Tomato seeds need the warmer temperatures, so try to maintain a temperature of at least 18C. Transplant to individual pots when the plants reach 5cm (2in) high, planting into a greenhouse, grow bags, large pots or beds. Water daily and feed with liquid fertiliser when the first truss of flowers appears. Pinch out the side shoots as they appear and provide support for the plants as they develop. It is best to stake early while the plant is young to ensure a nice straight stem. Seeds can be sown directly once the soil warms in spring. Solid trellising should be provided prior to the plants becoming established.
Plant in early spring to summer. Harvest in 12-14 weeks.
