Here’s a super fun crafting idea to get everyone in the spirit for the Easter holiday! Get the kids making their own Easter baskets for the Easter Sunday egg hunt. This idea is no fail for kids no matter how artistic (or not so) they are, just be sure to use a LOT of glue once they have finished and are not looking!
You will need:
- A balloon
- Some fabric scraps or different quilting fabrics
- PVA glue
- Thick ribbon with wire in the edges ( enough to make the handle)
- Some Pinking Shears (the scissors that leave a zigzag pattern)
- A hole punch
Step 1: Cut your fabric with your pinking shears into 1 inch squares. They don’t need to be perfect in size just round about. You will need a good pile.
Blow up your balloon and draw a line around it with a pen about 1 third up from the bottom of the balloon. Then start pasting your fabric squares onto the bottom half of the balloon. Use lots of glue underneath and on top of each square and get them to overlap as much as you can but don’t worry if there are a few holes where you can see the balloon just add some more glue in the gap and once it dries it hold together with no holes.
Step 2: Cover the balloon with squares until you reach the line you drew and then add more glue! Cover all of the fabric pieces with a layer of glue and set upside down in a bowl to dry. I put mine in the hot water cupboard for a few nights as you will want it really dry.
Step 3: Pop the balloon with a pin and pull the balloon away from the fabric so that it takes a bowl like shape. You can either leave it like this or for a cleaner look cut a straight line with your pinking shears across the top of the bowl.
Step 4: Punch a hole on each side of the bowl and thread through your wired edge ribbon tying a knot to hold it in place on both sides.
TIP: Use a washable pen or a lighter colour to avoid it ending up on your fabric especially if you are going for the more rustic uncut look as we found out the hard way that it will transfer onto the inside of your bowl.
