You will need:
- a selection of ‘miniature world’ products from in store. Choose from dwellings, animals, fairies, gnomes, garden and accessories.
- a suitably sized vessel. Eg. A pot, vase, wheelbarrow, up-cycled tin or planter, toy truck, bathtub the possibilities are endless really!
- soil
- moss (try magicmoss.co.nz for an amazing selection)
- some thick florist wire
- some very small pebbles
- some plants or cuttings, varied heights work best.
STEP 1
Before you put the soil in your container have a play with your ‘miniature world’ items, moving them around until you are happy and have a plan. You will need to think about elevations. Imagine where there might be a hill or slope and where the flat resting areas and gardens will be much like building a house on an empty section really. Now it’s time to put the soil in and mold the land!
STEP 2
Start with the biggest things first like the dwelling, bridges, wells etc. placing them firmly in the soil. For the dwelling I have chosen, a hill needed to be made for it to sit up against. Since retaining walls are not so possible here I’ve had to add a piece of hessian to the top to keep the soil contained. (You could also use a little piece of weed matting or similar.) I’ve cut some lengths of wire and folded them in half to create staples and I’ve pressed them into the hessian and soil to keep everything in place. I then covered the hill with moss and added some more staples.
STEP 3
Add some plants around your house to create little gardens and add moss between and around them. Think about using taller treelike plants at the back and smaller flatter formed plants in the front. You don’t want to see any soil showing so the 2 options for ground cover are moss or little rocks. The rocks should be used when a path or courtyard is needed. Lastly add all your accessories and animals.
