This is a great way to get out some of your fine (or not so fine) China from the depths of your cupboard, dust it off and let it take centre stage once again! Failing that, a trip to your local opportunity shop might be in order as these pretty cupcake stands are a must at any afternoon tea, (high tea or not!).
- 3 or 4 plates that differ in size. Usually a dinner plate, breakfast plate and saucer work well for a 3 tier stand. I was lucky enough to find a plate in between sizes too, so I was able to make a 4th tier on mine.
- 2 small stemmed glasses (3 tier stand) or 3 glasses for a 4 tier stand
- Some suitable glue (look for one that says it is for glass/ceramic) I used 2 part epoxy
Step 1:
Give the plates and glasses a good hot wash and dry thoroughly. You may like to find the centre of each of your plates placing a very small pencil dot in the middle of each (top and bottom), as the trickiest part is getting everything centered.
Step 2:
Mix up your glue following the instructions shown on the pack and use a brush to apply to the top of your tallest glass (only mix enough glue for the top of your first glass as you will need to wait in between each step for around 4-5 mins for the glue to cure.) I found to avoid the glue running down the side of the glass, it was better to apply the glue to the glass side on.
Step 3:
Place the glass upside down on your biggest plate in the very centre. Hold it in place for 30 seconds or so a then wait 4-5 minutes for it to cure before you start the next step.
Step 4:
Mix up another batch of glue and apply to the whole base of the glass then balance the next sized plate on top. You will need to get down low and look underneath when placing it to make sure it’s centered. Continue on with the steps above until each plate and glass attached.
Serve with sweet treats and tea in pretty china cups!
